Project Lampedusa

Since June 2019, our Italian-learning pupils have taken part in an initiative called "Porta d'Europa" promoted by the European Union and the Italian Ministry of Education and University Research (MIUR) on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance and Reception (la Giornata della Memoria e dell'Accoglienza) of the tragedy of the shipwreck near the shores of Lampedusa, where 368 men, women and children died on 3rd October 2013.

This initiative is organised by the Comitato tre Ottobre, chaired by Tareke Bhrane (Peace Nobel prize nominee), which involves students from many European schools coming together to share ideas, listen to NGO experts and meet refugees and survivors of many shipwrecks in the Mediterranean to help young people understand the issues of immigration, integration, inclusion and acceptance of diversity.

Last year, a small delegation of students representing the Lycée francais Charles de Gaulle de Londres, accompanied by their Italian teacher, Ernestina Meloni, took part in the three-day conference in Lampedusa. It was a life changing experience! Unfortunately, due to the Covid situation, this year students weren't able to take part in person; but during the lockdown, they translated their thoughts and emotions in words and images.

Amalina H.-T. (Terminale pupil at LFCG) drew a picture which was awarded a prize. It was included in the documentary prepared by the students of the Istituto Ettore Majorana of Gela (Sicily). The documentary is in Italian.

Mrs Meloni and her pupils are already working for next year’s Lampedusa project with the hope they can attend in person.
Over this February half-term, they participated in two webinars co-chaired by the Comitato 3 Ottobre and Amnesty International. These webinars are part of the programme aiming to spread the information on activities run by the Comitato 3 Ottobre called Semi di Lampedusa / Seeds of Lampedusa.
One of the conferences discussed Immigrants and international protections, whilst the other focused on Immigrants and LGBTI asylum seekers experiences
Both meetings went very well with between 60 and 115 students attending.

The students from the Lycée who attended both webinars were Terminale European Section, 1ere Italianists, PAL, and students who left the LFCG last year and took part in the initial Lampedusa Project, as well as students from the British Section who left last year.

As they say in Italian, in bocca al lupo (break a leg) for a reopening of borders and the resumption of actual meetings so these dedicated youngsters can physically attend next year’s event!
