ACS Cobhan hosted a successful Beach Volleyball Tournament at Barn Elms on 24th May, with a record number of participants from Sevenoaks, Cobham, Northolt High, Lakenheath, TASSIS, Burgess Hill and The Lycée Français Charles De Gaulle.
10 students from Lycée Français AS Volleyball were selected and attended the event, three teams competing in the Boys Tournament and two teams in the Girls Tournament. Despite competing against older students, from schools with extensive volleyball programmes and an abundance of resources, we successfully returned a gold and a silver medal from two of the six divisions.
The Lycée students received 8 additional hours of training, two extra hours on each of previous four Saturdays to adjust their indoor volleyball skills to the sand and the weather conditions.
Volleyball is a popular sport at the Lycée and it was difficult to select the ones representing the school at this event.
The day was long and intense with a lot of games, but the sun and warm temperature made the tournament a fantastic experience.
Mr Moran and Mr Bello accompanied the students during the preparation and during the tournament and were extremely proud and impressed as our students once again showed the extraordinary values of the Lycée, effort, fight, commitment, determination, accompanied by impeccable behaviour and sportsmanship.
This year was difficult for the boys to win the top of the competition as a volleyball academy, where the students train 5 x 2 hours per week, was invited to participate. Our students have volleyball as part of their PE curriculum and attend a club once per week.
However the differences in the performance levels was negligible as the Lycée students battled and performed well. Despite some disappointments with individual results that cost gold medals or podium places the students were excellent and should be proud of their achievements.
Both girls teams played well , but our 3e team were exceptional in achieving second place in Div. 1, where most teams were represented by students from Premiere and Terminale age groups.
