Italian-learning pupils have contributed in Twinkl's Yellow Butterfly (Farfalla Gialla in Italian) digital contest for the celebration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27th January. Since 2020, a yellow butterfly has become the symbol of this memorial day, as it represents rebirth and hope, freedom from oppression, intolerance and hatred.

The Yellow Butterfly Project started in 2020, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp. This symbol is featured in The Butterfly, a poem by Pavel Friedman who died in Auschwitz in 1944.  

Twinkl is a British online educational publishing house, producing teaching and educational materials, including many free resources, available to teachers worldwide. The purpose of the contest is to encourage young people to think about the past, to remember and honour the victims of the Holocaust, to appreciate their freedom and to learn to identify and fight injustice and discrimination.

Our pupils' contributions will be available on the contest's official page here on Twinkl's blog, and you can even vote for your favourite design from 5th to 10th February 2022. Results will be published at 5pm on the 10th.
